Not content with recently revamping its mid-range headphone line, Sony is all set to unveil a new pair of noise-canceling earbuds, according to reports.
Sony fan site The Walkman Blog (opens in new tab) claims the Japanese tech giant is preparing a successor to its popular entry-level Sony WF-C500 true wireless earbuds, pictured above, with the all-new active noise canceling model.
The blog points to an import filing showing that the new model will be called the WF-C700N and will support Bluetooth 5.2.
The filing also reveals that a 7 x 3 x 2 cm battery will be installed, raising hopes that the new model could have a greater capacity than the 10 hours offered by the WF-C500 – although noise canceling consumes a lot of power, so it might just be necessary to counteract that increased energy consumption.
However, it remains unclear which wireless audio codecs the new earbuds will support. The WF-C500s were limited to AAC and SBC codecs only and were not compatible with Sony’s high-resolution LDAC streaming – a feature now standard on most of the brand’s mid-range headphones.
The report comes after a schedule leaked last year revealed a WF-C500 successor was on the way, and would retain the same look as its predecessor, with the same black, green, violet and white color options on offer.
While it doesn’t reveal pricing details the FCC documentation suggests we might not have to wait too long for the WF-C700N as its confidentiality expires in the next few months so we have to assume Sony will officially announce it before Dan .
Analysis: New tops could be a budgetary breakthrough for ANC
We were more than a little fond of the Sony WF-C500 when they were first released a few years ago.
While they had some understandable trade-offs for their price, such as their middling battery life, vibrant sound, and comfortable design, they were an excellent budget proposition.
The affordable true wireless market is a ridiculously competitive space right now, but if Sony can add noise canceling to an already excellent pair of cheap earbuds while also extending battery life, it’s going to be hard to see a match for the WF-C700Ns within this price range, except perhaps the Earfun Air Pro 3.
