Shazam! Anger of the godsdirector started with the “really good” scene which he left on the cutting room floor much to his disappointment.
In an exclusive chat with BingoTingo ahead of the release of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) movie, David F. Sandberg explained that a scene with Mary Bromfield (Grace Caroline Currey) was the scene he was most hesitant to cut out of the final film. version to delete.
The sequence, in which Mary delivers takeout food as her super-powered alter ego, is said to be connected Shazam! 2‘s exploration of teens missing out on important life experiences due to other commitments. It’s an important theme that we’ve picked up on in our Shazam! Anger of the gods review, and one that touches Mary and Freddy Freeman (Jack Dylan Grazer) more than most in the film.
“There will be about half an hour of deleted and alternate scenes on the Blu-Ray,” Sandberg said. “But I kind of missed the most important one [not including] was a scene with Mary. She’s like a Postmate driver, but she doesn’t drive – she uses her super speed and flying powers to get around.
“We see her making her rounds and taking food to a college where she runs into some old school friends. You see her desire to go to college and hang out with people her own age, but she needs to be a superhero. You know , Billy tries to keep everyone together, despite everyone wanting to do their own thing. So that scene was a lot of fun for her character and Grace did a really good job. But it was such an easy edit, and the movie was already too long , so we left it out to improve the playing time.”
This Mary-centered scene isn’t the only one Sandberg left out of the sequel to one of the best superhero movies (that’s 2019’s). Shazam!, in our view). Leading up to the sequel’s release, Sandberg took to Twitter to reveal some other scenes that didn’t make the cut. A saw Ladon the dragon eats a car (opens in new tab) that Billy Batson’s superhero alias throws at it, while another more humorous clip leads to DJ Cotrona’s Pedro making a mess of those oft-derided superhero landings.
Going through my early animations for Shazam 2 (made with Grease Pencil in Blender) I forgot I was doing this spoof on superhero landings for Pedro. A kind of wish that had made it to the film. pic.twitter.com/hiOafnhD1lFebruary 1, 2023
Still, as we say in our Shazam! 2 review, the movie is a fun superhero movie without these scenes, albeit one that ultimately sidelines the main themes for more general superhero genres.
