Even the very best phones sometimes leave you wanting when it comes to battery life, with today’s most premium handsets – think Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and iPhone 14 Pro Max – coming in at around a day of heavy use.
Bigger batteries come at the expense of portability, of course, but that hasn’t stopped one Reddit user from answering the question: What would happen if you strapped a huge power pack to the back of a cheap smartphone?
As noted by 9to5Google (opens in new tab)Redditor u/Downtown_Cranberry44 (opens in new tab) performed some DIY wizardry to successfully connect a working 30,000mAh battery to their Samsung Galaxy A32 5G. Yes, you read that right: a 30,000 mAh battery. For context, that’s six times the size of the Galaxy A32 5G’s original 5,000mAh battery, which already delivers moderate use for around two days.
Do the math: if you get two days of energy from a 5,000 mAh battery, a 30,000 mAh battery should – on paper at least – deliver almost two weeks of battery life. So there is a good chance that you/Downtown_Cranberry44 own the longest-lasting smartphone in the world. Check out some images of the custom device below:

Of course, this isn’t the kind of DIY modification we recommend you do yourself at home. For starters, the 30,000 mAh battery pack seems to have rendered this particular Galaxy A32 5G nearly useless, adding about a pound (half a kilogram) of weight and an additional 3 inches of size to an otherwise slim and lightweight smartphone.
However, the bigger concern is one of safety. As 9to5Google points out, power packs of this size are more prone to leakage and external damage; there’s a reason current US law prohibits you from boarding a flight with batteries larger than 27,000 mAh.
For now, this kind of home experimentation is nothing more than that – we don’t expect Apple to add huge batteries to the back of the iPhone 15, for example. But these kinds of experiments can help us realize how much smart technology is in the neat packaging of c. 5,000 mAh batteries in today’s smartphones.
As for the phones offering the longest-lasting batteries in 2023, you’ll get around 16 hours from the Asus ROG Phone 6 and just over 13 hours from both the recently released Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
