Microsoft hopes to make it even easier to find recently opened files with the Microsoft 365 app for Android, and you don’t even need to have opened them from a Microsoft app for them to appear.
The announcement (opens in new tab) comes from Sudheender Srinivasan, product manager of the Microsoft 365 mobile app team, who introduced the revised feature designed to discover files more efficiently.
Although specific office software and apps for tools like Word and Excel remain crucial for on-the-go editing, the company’s recently rebranded Microsoft 365 app should serve as the primary location to find your work.
Microsoft 365 recent files
Srinivasan explained that the “Recent” tab not only lists files recently opened by Microsoft’s apps, but also from third-party apps such as WhatsApp and Gmail.
The update will be available to Microsoft Insiders first, and specifically for version 16.0.16227.20076 or higher of the Android app. It’s also rolling out gradually, so some Insiders may not get access yet.
To that end, there is at least one known problem, which is that sometimes it just doesn’t work. Srinivasan explains:
“You may need to close and reopen the app a few times before the feature works as expected.”
There’s currently no word on iOS availability, but if testing proves successful, it will likely roll out to more platforms, including both smartphones and tablets.
A ‘Recents’ tab is nothing new, but code changes and indeed the implementation of AI all serve to make an employee’s life even easier, and if we can find that file we’ve been looking for without any hassle, then its we’re all for it.
