It seems that the apparent health benefits of standing desks are the main reasons people want to make the switch, our research shows.
We teamed up with OnePulse to ask 1,000 people if they have a standing desk, and more than a fifth said they don’t but would like to get one this year. When we investigated further and asked them why, most listed improving their psychological well-being as their main concern.
We also asked them which features were most important when making their purchase decision – a question we also asked the 15% who already owned a standing desk.
Upright
When asked why people without a standing desk would want to buy one, the most common answers were improving posture (64%) and health (51%). 30% also mentioned the need for a new desk in general.
Several respondents also commented specifically on the desire to relieve back pain, and a few others said it would help them focus and want to move more during the day, which is possible with a convertible standing desk – a desk that is easily can be adjusted to sitting and standing height.
When it came to the features they most wanted in a standing desk, price (28%) and durability (23%) were the most important. The size, additional features like a cup holder, and conversion speed were all fairly equally desirable, with about 12%-15% of respondents opting for these options. Desk noise was the least concern, with only 6% citing it as a major factor.
For those who already have a standing desk, price and durability were again most important, although the order of importance was reversed (26% for price and 32% for durability this time). Size was also a bigger concern for this group, with 20% saying it was important.
Given the financial hardship many face in the current economic climate, it may not come as much of a surprise that price is a bigger concern for those looking to buy a standing desk now than for those who have had one in the past purchased.
Standing desks certainly don’t come cheap, but their increased popularity means more competition between manufacturers, which in turn means there are more affordable, high-quality options than ever before, and more variety in design and features available.
