Just a few months after integrating into Bing, ChatGPT has made the leap to iOS as a third-party app exclusive to the Apple Watch.
It’s called Petey – AI assistant (opens in new tab) and it was created by developer Hidde van de Ploeg (listed as Modum BV in the App Store). It was originally known as watchGPT, but due to trademark issues with the acronym “GPT”, the name had to be changed. Looking at one demo video posted by the developer on Twitter, Petey works the same way as Siri. You open the app, ask it a question and it replies via text-to-speech in seconds. To continue with a question, swipe down on the watch face and tap Answer. Unlike Apple’s own Siri, as an assistant Petey can give quite complex answers, such as giving steps how to catch a fish.
One of the problems with voice assistants like Siri is that they’re pretty rigid about what they can do. You have to ask those AIs specific questions in a way to get an answer. ChatGPT, on the other hand, is more flexible in what it can do, from writing business letters to even composing Christmas stories. It’s hard to say exactly how capable Petey is, but at least it seems like you don’t have to wrestle with it all that much.
A work in progress
Petey is a work in progress as new features are added all the time. Right now you have a handful to work with. For starters, you can share the comments with other people “via text, email, or social media,” though the list on the App Store doesn’t specify which ones.
The app can be set as a complication on the Apple Watch face for quick access. Support for multiple languages is also growing, bringing the total to 14. Petey now supports German, Italian, and Japanese, just to name a few. If you like, Petey also comes with a small on-screen keyboard so you can type your questions. You’re probably better off using your voice.
As for future updates, there are several things in the works. As far as we know, Van der Ploeg is working on adding a History tool so you can go back to a previous question, make vocal input the default, and improve the overall performance of the app so you can ask it multiple questions.
However, there are a few caveats. First, the app isn’t free, as you have to buy it for $4.99 (around £4, over $7 AUD and almost €5) from the App Store. To use Petey, you must have an Apple Watch running watchOS 9 or later. So make sure to update your device if you haven’t already. We have to mention that the software does not collect any user data, so rest assured that your privacy is safe.
Unfortunately, users with an Android smartwatch are out of luck. When asked about a possible Android version, van der Ploeg said there won’t be because his “skills wouldn’t allow it” [for] That”.
