Your Roku streaming device will be getting an upgrade in the coming weeks with the arrival of Roku OS 12, which will introduce a slew of new features.
One of the most useful features in Roku OS 12 is a Continue Watching update. Found in the What to Watch section, Continue Watching takes you right back to the streaming content you were watching the last time you used your Roku. With this new OS update, Discovery Plus, Prime Video and Freevee join HBO Max, Netflix, Paramount Plus and The Roku Channel as services supporting Continue Watching.
Sports fans will also find that your Roku is better at recommending games you care about. With the new OS update, Roku promises its service will offer more personalized suggestions based on your location, favorite teams, go-to sports, and other viewing habits. When this recommendation feature launches, it will be able to suggest content from CBS Sports, MLB.TV, NBA League Pass, and NBC Sports – but to watch the content, you’ll need to subscribe to the service hosting it.
Not only will these Sports and Continue Watching updates appear on your Roku TV and streaming stick when Roku OS 12 rolls out, your Roku Mobile app will also be updated. The mobile app’s home screen gets a revamp to streamline content and includes dedicated rows for Continue Watching and Sports.
In addition to the changes outlined above, the introduction of Roku OS 12 also brings updates to your Roku’s Live TV that match a great feature of Amazon Fire TV’s
After the OS update, Roku’s Local News feature will let you watch your local news channel – based on your location – or stream the channel from several major cities in the US.
You can also view and sign up for Premium Live TV subscriptions from the Roku Live TV channel guide. While this tool makes it easier to access content that might interest you, it can make it easier for users of your Roku to sign up and pay for a new service. That’s why we recommend making sure your account is set up to require people to enter a password or PIN before they can pay for a new service
You can do this by logging into your account at my.roku.com (opens in new tab) and then go to Pin Preference on your account and press Update. From here you need to go to Purchase and add content and then choose one of the following options:
- Always need a PIN to make purchases and add items from the Channel Store
- Always need a PIN code to make purchases
If you’ve already set up a Pin, consider changing it if others know what it is.
