A fierce debate is raging online about whether or not Cocaine Bear should be considered a good movie or not.
We are only two months into 2023, but after the unprecedented success of M3GAN – thanks in part to the online pre-release of the horror film that went viral – another horror film entered Cocaine Bear causes a storm on social media.
What have you never heard of Cocaine Bear? Allow us to paint you a picture. Loosely inspired by a true story surrounding the infamous, well, “Cocaine Bear,” the comedy horror film from Universal Pictures tells the 1985 story of a grizzly bear who ingests a duffel bag of the psychostimulant drug.

In the film adaptation, the 500-pound bear — affectionately known in the real world as Pablo Eskobear (you know, after legendary drug kingpin Pablo Escobar) — goes on a bloodthirsty, drug-fueled rampage across North Georgia. , killing everyone in its path.
After the release of the official trailer in December 2022, Cocaine Bear quickly gained traction online, with social media users rallying support for the B movie before its theatrical release. But now that the film is in cinemas worldwide, Cocaine Bear has become the talk of the social media city, with millions of people debating whether or not it’s a good movie.
First, the “it’s okay!” camp. At the moment of writing, Cocaine Bear has an 83% certified fresh rating on the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes (opens in new tab). In the hours since its public release, Cocaine Bear turns out to be a verifiable hit. Some, including George Clark (opens in new tab) And Beck&Woods (opens in new tab)have taken to social media to hail the movie as one of the best movies of 2023 so far, with others like ReedReads4 jokingly praising M3GAN And Cocaine Bear – both of which are owned by Universal – for saving the movie theater experience. However, it hasn’t all been good news. There are plenty of people who just don’t to get the profession of Cocaine Bearwith Twitter users vibewitkeezy (opens in new tab) And internetmoso (opens in new tab) asking how such a stupid looking movie could be made in the 21st century. Elsewhere, Alan Zilberman (opens in new tab) said it was “bad and not in a nice way” while Patrick Vicious wanted Cocaine Bear to be a “so bad it’s good” kind of thing. Unfortunately for Patrick, he didn’t think so.

It is unclear how much money Cocaine Bear will actually make. By variety (opens in new tab), the Elizabeth Banks-directed film made $2 million on its opening night. With a reported $20 million budget, it will have to sell many more tickets to recoup its production and marketing costs.
Still, it doesn’t look like the box office performance will occur Cocaine Bear of getting a sequel. According to those who have seen the film, a ‘Marvel style’Cocaine Bear will return’ tagline is shown after the credits roll. This could be a way to poke fun at superhero movies and how they dominate the Hollywood landscape, but we’d like to think that Pablo Esokbear will be back for more gory misadventures in the future.
Even if it doesn’t get a sequel, Cocaine Bear And M3GAN proving that there is still an audience for experimental, non-superhero movies in today’s market.
